Skilled Worker

The Skilled Worker Category purpose is to attract skilled workers to come and live in Canada. Strengthening Canada's skilled labor market and economy. This category also enables skilled persons who are interested; to live and work in Canada, to improve their standards of living, flourish and enjoy what this great country has to offer.

A foreign national is a skilled worker if:

(a) Within 10 years before the date of their application for Permanent resident visa, they have at least one year of continuous Full-time employment experience, or the equivalent in continuous Part-time employment in one or more occupations;

(b) During that period of employment they performed the actions  described in the lead statement for the occupation as set out in the occupational descriptions of the National Occupational Classification; and

(c) During that period of employment they performed a large number of the main duties of the occupation as set out in the occupational descriptions of the National Occupational Classification, including all of the essential duties.

Before a skilled worker application can be processed, the applicant is required to accumulate a minimum of 67 points out of 100 from a skilled worker point system.

Skilled workers destined to Quebec are assessed against the Quebec selection grid, which differs from the federal selection grid.

Please note that as of September 1, 2006 Citizenship and Immigration Canada has implemented a new 'Simplified' application process for skilled workers. For more information on the new application procedures please contact our office for a consultation.
